San Diego Wave FC won the World Sevens tournament championship with a 3-0 victory over Tigres UANL at Beyond Bancard Field in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The club's defender Hanna Lundkvist forced a turnover and found teammate Makenzy Robbe inside the box who right-footed the ball past goalkeeper Cecilia Santiago in the 10th minute. San Diego Wave FC's midfielder Gia Corley recovered possession and gave a perfect pass to forward Adriana Leon who was streaking down the left side and calmly tapped the ball into the back of the net early in the second-half. Leon ended up putting the finishing touches one minute later with a solid strike from outside the box that found the bottom corner for the 3-0 final. San Diego Wave head coach Jonas Eidevall said 'We're the champions, we won and we won it our way.' The team got several outstanding performances throughout the three-day competition, but none greater than that of goalkeeper Dijana 'DiDi' Haračić who came up with huge saves which included the penalty-kick shootout win over Club America on day two. The Wave made it to the championship match after a resounding 5-1 win over Flamengo in the semifinals. The seven-on-seven event for professional soccer clubs made its U.S. debut with teams from North, Central and South America. The total prize purse for the tournament was set at $5 million.
